Designed by Isamu Noguchi
The son of an American writer and a Japanese poet, Isamu Noguchi was born in Los Angeles in 1904. He spent his childhood in Japan and his adolescence in America. Noguchi's fascination with art began while he was a pre-med student at Columbia University. A Guggenheim Fellowship in 1927 took him to Paris, where he worked in Brancusi's atelier. Noguchi's interests were as wide ranging as his travels; he designed visionary sets and costumes for the Martha Graham Dance Company and New York City Ballet, furniture and objects for a variety of manufacturers, the Akari lamps and myriad environments, site installations and large-scale public sculptures of great note. The Noguchi Garden Museum in Long Island City, New York, is a repository of his work.

The Design

Conceived in 1953 as a rocking stool made of metal wire and wood, Noguchi's playful object was manufactured the following year in varying sizes, and later evolved into a table that became a companion piece to the Bertoia wire children's chair. At the suggestion of Hans Knoll, Noguchi's small table was enlarged to full size in 1957. Reintroduced by Knoll in collaboration with the Noguchi Foundation, the design is now meticulously produced from Noguchi's original drawings. The sculptural base consists of a column of chrome-plated steel wires set into a cast-iron black porcelain-finished foot. The top is available in black or white laminate.

White Glove Bronze Additional Information:

This item will be delivered by a white glove freight carrier. White glove carriers are different from common carriers in that they provide the customer with many benefits throughout the delivery process. Unlike common carriers, a white glove delivery team consists of at least two people so you will not be burdened with helping the driver carry your order from the back of the truck to your home.

Important note: Once your order arrives in your area, a representative from the white glove carrier will call you to arrange a 4 hour window for delivery. You MUST inspect your package at the time of delivery. If the product has any damage, or if there is any reason for you to be at all concerned about damage, please write "PRODUCT DAMAGED" clearly on the sheet that they ask you to sign. This simply insures that if there is any damage, it will be easy to take care of the problem.

White Glove Freight Service Levels

We offer 4 different levels of service for this item: White Glove Bronze, White Glove Silver, White Glove Gold and White Glove Platinum. White Glove Bronze is selected as your default shipping method; if you wish to upgrade to a higher service level you may make this selection in your cart during the checkout process. Please read the service descriptions below to determine which level is best for your needs.

White Glove Bronze
Bronze service level provides two-man delivery to inside the threshold of your residence. If you live in a home with a garage, this means the product will be left in your garage. If you do not have a garage, the product will be left in your front entrance or mudroom. If you live in an apartment building or condo, the product will be carried up two flights of stairs from the building threshold (4-15 steps = 1 flight). If you need the product moved up additional flights, please contact us*. The product will be left in the original packaging.

White Glove Silver
Silver service level provides two-man delivery to inside your residence to the room you choose. This service includes carrying the product up two flights of stairs from the building threshold (4-15 steps = 1 flight). If you need the product moved up additional flights, please contact us*. The product will be left in the original packaging.

White Glove Gold
Gold service level provides two-man delivery to inside your residence to the room you choose. This service includes carrying the product up two flights of stairs from the building threshold (4-15 steps = 1 flight). If you need the product moved up additional flights, please contact us*. Once the product is in the room you desire, the shipper will unpack the product and provide basic setup that requires no tools (i.e. will set pieces next to each other, or on top of each other). The shipper will also remove and dispose of all packaging.

White Glove Platinum
Platinum service level provides two-man delivery to inside your residence to the room you choose. This service includes carrying the product up two flights of stairs from the building threshold (4-15 steps = 1 flight). If you need the product moved up additional flights, please contact us*. Once the product is in the room you desire, the shipper will unpack the product and provide light setup that requires basic tools (i.e. pieces will be screwed or bolted together, set pieces next to each other, or on top of each other). The shipper will also remove and dispose of all packaging.

*In all cases the shipper will not hookup any electrical or component wires. Having items carried up more than 25 steps and longer assembly periods are available as additional services which would require additional charges. Please contact us if you feel you need these services.
