Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Influenced by Marcel Breuer’s use of tubular steel, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe quickly recognized the compatibility of this revolutionary material with the contemporary design ethos. Inspired by the lines of tubular iron rockers designed in Europe during the mid-19th century, Mies incorporated a new material and a new technology in the use of the cantilever principle.

The Design

“Architecture is a language; when you are very good you can be a poet,” wrote the acclaimed architect and Bauhaus director. As a leading Modernist architect and furniture designer, Mies elevated industrial-age materials to an art form. His steel-framed buildings with large-scale glazing, like the Seagram Building in New York (1958) and the Nationalgalerie in Berlin (1968), are landmarks of Modern architecture.

In 1927, while planning the Esters and Lange residences in Krefeld, Germany, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe conceived a restrained, emblematic lounge chair, ottoman and companion table, which embody the syntax, skill and diversity of his work. The Krefeld Collection, developed in consultation with the Museum of Modern Art in New York, is a “furniture suite” based on Mies' original drawings from the Mies van der Rohe Archive. The beautifully proportioned pieces, originally specified in leather, offer intimate scale and exceptional comfort. The collection includes a lounge chair, ottoman, settee, sofa, medium and large benches, as well as side tables and coffee tables. The Krefeld Lounge Chair will be a fantastic addition to any home, office or reception area.
