About the Designer
Tokujin YoshiokaTokujin Yoshioka Japan (1967 - )

Born in Japan in 1967, he studied at the Kuwasawa Design School, graduating in 1986. In 1992 he began work as a free-lance designer and eight years later he established a studio in Tokyo. His professional career is rooted in the fruitful collaboration with Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake. The ten-year association with the famous fashion designer has produced numerous important projects, such as the Issey Miyake and A-POC stores. The exhibitions Issey Miyake Making Things, at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris, and A-POC Making, at the Vitra Design Museum in Berlin, are among the most brilliant examples of his work as set designer, director, and maker of installations. He has received many international acknowledgments: JDC Design Award of Excellence in 1997; AandW The Coming Designer for The Future Award in 2001; Mainichi Design Award in 2001 and 2002. Honey-pop is part of the permanent collection at the New York MoMA, the Centro Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Vitra Design Museum in Berlin. Tokujin Yoshioka's collaboration with driade started in 2002, when he created the Honey-pop and Tokyo-pop designs for the dadriade showroom in Milan. The following year he conceived the artistic performance for Clouds, the event at the Rotonda della Besana in Milan with which driade celebrated its 35 years on the design scene.

Inspired by the play of warp and weft in woven fabric, Tokujin Yoshioka wanted to use this stylistic symbol typical of his culture, weaving, and thus recreated it in the Ami Ami chair and table whose name in Japanese literally means "weave". The simple squared off lines contrast with the rich texture of the weaving reproduced on the inner and outer surfaces through a complex industrial process recreating the motif with a single mold. Ami Ami combines the appeal of oriental culture with the use of innovative materials like polycarbonate and comes in two transparent clear and smoked versions and three matte versions of white, red and black. The Ami Ami seat matches the table with a square polycarbonate top measuring 27.5"x 27.5" covered by the weaving motif and painted aluminium legs.
