Herman Miller ® Embody Chair

You point, click, and fixate on your computer screen. And you sit still for hours. Your body screams, ''Move!'' Unless you're seated in Embody. Designed specifically for people who interact with computers for long periods of time, Embody is a huge leap forward in seating. With a back that is alive, mimicking your spine to promote health-positive sitting, Embody creates harmony between you and your computer. In fact, Embody is the first work chair that supports your mind as well as your body, enabling you to focus, think clearly, and create. The Embody story began in the design studio of Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf. They had an idea: 'What if a design could go beyond just minimizing the negative effects of sitting? What if we designed a chair that positively impacts your life so you can work and live better?'' Stumpf, co-designer of Herman Miller's Aeron, Equa, and Ergon work chairs, came to Herman Miller and said, ''I think I have one more in me.'' Stumpf passed away in 2006. Working closely with a cross-functional team from Herman Miller, Weber carried on. As Embody's designer, Weber gave the chair its function and form, building on Stumpf's inspiration. Their idea arose out of their approach to design. ''You can't design without empathy,'' says Weber, who also designed Herman Miller's Caper chair. ''Since design has become more technology-based, We've had to sit in our chairs in front of computers for longer periods of time, just like everyone else. We identify with the problems people have as a result of sitting, and we identify with their need to produce ideas.'' Throughout the development of Embody, over 30 professionals contributed a range of expertise. Physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics helped test hypotheses, review prototypes, and conduct studies that helped guide the development.

Very Impressed

Christopher from Somerville, MA– Verified Buyer

Length of ownership: 3 months
Length of experience with this model of chair: 7 months

Comfort: The chair provides ample support for my lower back and very high range of motion at the shoulders. The back of the chair allows your body to twist and turn naturally as you sit. Seat fabric is breathable. The fabric is thin so you may notice that you feel the underlying support construction beneath it. This may be slightly off-putting if you are used to chairs with ample foam or padding on the seat. However, I very quickly began to appreciate the feel and how my weight was distributed. This isn't a seat you sink into. The seat holds you firmly to support you and give you the best chance at proper posture, which is exactly what you want for a workstation sitting arrangement. Overall this is the most accommodating and comfortable chair I have ever sat in.

Style: The striking design of the chair is likely to be polarizing. I really love the futuristic look and feel of the Embody. I was able to select colors and materials that fit perfectly with the design motif of my workspace. I have every day, without fail, gotten a kick out of seeing the chair from behind. It looks like something off the bridge of a starship.

Durability: 3 months in and no reliability issues to report.

Adjustments: Pretty much every adjustment you would want is available. It can take a few days of fiddling with nobs and levers to get it just the way you want it. But after you do, you'll almost never touch anything again.

Note: This chair is very heavy (especially with the aluminum base option). Make sure you have proper carpet protection or at least the appropriate rollercaster options selected for your workstation floor.

Areas for improvement: If you need more than one seating posture...for example if sometimes you need to be upright and alert, and other times lounging backwards, you may need to make subtle knob adjustments. Its a minor annoyance but finding exactly the setting that you changed from previously may be slightly difficult until you have practice with the chair.

Bottom Line: Highly recommended for anyone who spends a good deal of the day sitting at a desk. The price is very high but it is an acceptable expense for a superb chair.

Embody Chair

Evan from GA

This chair is very comfortable, I like it a lot. I did notice that it seems to rattle quite a bit, but it has a warranty so if I do need to fix it or get it worked out I'm not worried. It's easily the most comfortable chair I've ever had, though, I'm very happy with it.

About the Designer

Jeff Weber

Jeff Weber

As a kid, Jeff Weber was fascinated by the way things worked. "I was always tinkering—either building things or tearing them apart," he says. Watching his mechanical talents develop, his grandfather suggested that he consider becoming an industrial designer. Once he learned more, "I never really thought about doing anything else," recalls Weber. Today he uses his considerable talents to improve the human condition by designing products that enhance people's lives—at home and at work. "There should always be a human benefit associated with whatever it is we're designing," he explains. "It's all about the experience, stimulating a person's senses in a positive or beneficial way." While Weber's work includes a wide spectrum of products, he became interested in furniture design when he teamed up with Bill Stumpf, who worked with Herman Miller for 30 years. "Bill's design spirit will inspire all my future work," says Weber. One example is Stumpf's "uni-part" theory. "It says that all components of any given object must have a functional purpose as well as an aesthetic one," says Weber. "It's a fundamental principle we employ every day." In the studio, that philosophy means the design of an object, a building, or a service "is the connective tissue between people and the world. The quality of that design really dictates the quality of the user's experience and thus defines our existence." With an emphasis on results, an integral and important aspect in his design process is research. When designing Herman Miller's Embody chair, for example, Weber and the Herman Miller team spent nearly two years talking with experts in various fields of medicine, from specialists in upper-extremity conditions to optometrists and neurologists. It was all in an effort to gain a real understanding of what it takes "to support a body in space in a healthful way and enable motion at the same time," he says. "The human body is a constant source of inspiration for me," he continues. "Workplace demands and responsibilities may change, but the human element remains relatively the same. My challenge is always, 'How can I produce something that will actually improve that condition?' Comfort and health are like love and peace: can we ever have enough?" he ponders. Weber says the most satisfying part of his work is watching someone enjoying the final outcome of his efforts. "Seeing someone sitting in a chair and appreciating the logic and rationale behind it is very gratifying." He says he's finding this stage of his career to be especially energizing. "I've always believed that good design is a blend of art and science," he says. "To use that combination in ways that positively impact how people live and work is really exciting to me."

Design is an integral part of the business. The product must be honest. You decide what you will make. There is a market for good design. While fashion and style have their place, the main criterion for a Herman Miller ® product has remained constant: Does it truly solve a problem that people care about in a way that improves upon other solutions, or pioneers a new and better answer altogether? The answer is Yes.
