About the Designer Charles & Ray Eames United States
Charles Ormond Eames, Jr (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" (née Kaiser) Eames (1912–1988) were American designers, who worked in and made major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art and film.
With its emphasis on beautiful materials and simplified forms, the Eames Sofa exemplifies the best in modern furniture design. Its angled profile and clean planes showcase a harmonious combination of quality components. Equally fitting for a modern home or office, It's a luxurious place to settle back and relax. The sofa takes its visual strength from the interplay of rich walnut or teak, soft leather, and polished aluminum. Strong but subtle legs give the distinct impression of cushions floating in air. Thanks to those ample cushions, everyone gets a luxurious seat, whether sitting in a waiting room or waiting in a sitting room. The Design:
Charles Eames began this design in 1967, set it aside, and then returned to it in 1976.
The Eames Sofa is the last piece of furniture produced by the Eames Office, which completed the design after Charles Eames died in 1978. It went into production in 1984 and has been manufactured by Herman Miller ever since.
Charles and Ray Eames designed the sofa to complement their plush soft pad chairs and the sleek chaise. It stands as a graceful reminder of the honest genius of Charles and Ray Eames.
