Charles and Ray Eames, always interested in new materials, saw in plastic the chance to form organic seat shells that conform to the body’s shape. The enduring forms and quality construction make the Molded Plastic Armchairs - available here with a rocker base - comfortable, durable performers.

The Design:

New materials, especially those that held promise for doing more with less, fascinated Charles and Ray Eames throughout their careers. Their fascination led to inventive modern furniture, such as the Molded Plastic Chair. Designed in 1948, it was the first plastic chair to be mass produced.

The current models look exactly the same as the originals. They remain unupholstered, in keeping with the Eameses requirement that materials be expressed honestly and unselfconsciously. In fact, these were the first one-piece plastic chairs to be left uncovered.

At the same time, the chairs are better than ever. For example, the shell is now manufactured using more environmentally friendly, high-impact plastic.

lemon from canada	4.0 4/30/2011 rocking chair this is a very unique and stylish chair. we purchased originally to use in our baby's nursery but found it to be less than ideal for that purpose. the seat back is much too low to be comfortable. we ended up getting a more suitable rocker/glider for the nursery. still love the chair though...just use it in a different room. I got this shortly before the birth of my second child, but already it's seen good use by my toddler (who thinks we got it for him). Since it's so lightweight, I can move it into the bathroom to supervise when he has a long bath and, with a pillow behind my back, find it exceptionally comfortable for long stretches, despite my pregnant girth (a week to go). I bought the white rocker and I will pair it with the Oeuf classic crib and dresser. I am not pregnant yet we are just buying what we can now to spred out the spending so these items will go with a boy or girl nursery. The chair is surprisingly comfortable but my only concern is for my husband who is 6'9". He will probably not be using this chair as much because it is pretty low to the ground.
