About the Designer

Renzo Piano

Renzo Piano Italy (1937 - )

Renzo Piano was born in Genoa, Italy in 1937. From 1959 to 1964 he studied at the Milan Politecnico, where he taught until 1968. In 1970 Piano established a partnership with the English architect Richard Rogers. Together, Rogers and Piano designed a number of buildings in Italy and England. Their most famous building, the Pompidou Center in Paris, takes its form from a metaphor of the 'cultural machine' with all color-coded service elements and structure emphasized on the building's exterior. Like most works designed by members of the "High-Tech" movement, Piano established technology as a starting point for his designs. Fortunately, he modified his attempts to generate an architectural character based on technological forms with a concern for user comfort and needs. In his more recent works, Piano has applied his structural experiments to a range of social and civic projects.

About the Manufacturer

Architect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte in 1932 as an artistic division in the company Luigi Fontana, historically, the company leader in advanced glass manufacturing and design.

The designs were first distinguished by their realization of the artistic stained-glass windows, many of which are today still functional elements and ornamental in churches and cathedrals, among the Duomo of Milan and the cathedral of Brasilia. By using glass, architect Ponti realized what an enormous potential this material could offer in the making of furnishing complements for interiors.

Urged by this intuition he started to design and produce furniture, lamps, and objects with glass as the main distinguishing feature. In a short time a new collection was ready to be marketed, and his new design concept was being used as a complement to the interior decoration of many houses that he personally designed.

FontanaArte is certified as per regulation ISO 9001:2000. All designs, developing, production and sale of lighting appliances, furnishing accessories, and merchandising observe the regulation UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 for the best quality and to achieve first class customer satisfaction.

FontanaArte's fame, linked to glass and design, continues to grow thanks to the interpretations of Gio Ponti and the insightful collaboration of Pietro Chiesa.
