Bedspread: A bedspread is designed to cover the entire bed and hangs low enough to cover the box spring. Bedspreads are strictly ornamental.

Comforter: Comforters are designed to sit on top of the bed, covering just the top mattress. This means a comforter is usually smaller and requires a bed skirt to cover the box spring area. Comforters are designed to stay on the bed during the night. They are extra thick because they have the functional purpose of providing warmth.

Coverlet: A coverlet, also called quilt coverlet, is a lightweight bed topper that is designed more for decoration than warmth. It is shorter than a bedspread and is intended to expose the bed skirt. Rather than covering the pillows, a coverlet usually has matching decorative shams.

Matelasse: Matelasse is meant to mimic the style of hand-stitched quilts made in Marseilles, France. It is a heavy, thick textile that appears to be padded, but actually has no padding within the fabric.

Quilt: A Quilt is a type of blanket, traditionally composed of 3 layers of fiber: a woven cloth top, a layer of batting or wadding and a woven back, combined using the technique of quilting.
