About the Designer
Geoffrey Harcourt RDI (1935 - )
Geoffrey Harcourt (1935) trained at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1962, he designed his first series of small desk chairs for Artifort. This British designer provided the company with access to the international contract interior market, in which Artifort was not yet active at the beginning of the 1960's. Originally, Harcourt primarily designed seating for reception areas for such places as offices, hotels and airports. His second design for Artifort, the 042 series of 1963, was immediately an international success. In the 1980's, Harcourt designed mostly desk chairs and chairs for meetings. His philosophy is that the chair should focus on the person and not vice versa. "First the person and then the shape." Harcourt has won many prizes and in 1978 he received the title "Royal Designer for Industry."
About the Manufacturer
The foundations of Artifort were laid by Jules Wagemans. He set up business as an upholsterer in Maastricht in 1890. The name Artifort is derived from the Latin word ‘ars’ meaning art or knowledge, and ‘fortis’ meaning strong or powerful. The word ‘comfort’ is also reflected in this brand name. With big name designers such as Geoffrey Harcourt, Patrick Norguet, Kho Liang Ie and the French designer Pierre Paulin, many new techniques and constructions were introduced and great furniture designs became icons throughout the world. By the 1960's, internationally, the furniture seemed to be very much in demand, which resulted in enormous sales growth which has continued to boom to this day. Innovation remains the key factor to all of Artifort's designs; captivating to the eye and functional design play key roles in all of their most prized designs.
