Alessi 2.09-qt. Steel Bottom Water Tea Kettle

Kettle in stainless steel mirror polished with melodic whistle in brass and handle in PA, black. Magnetic steel heat diffusing bottom. This kettle was our first designer kettle, heralding a new season of kettle ideas for ourselves as well as many other kettle manufacturers. The true heart of this design is the brass whistle whose pipes sing two notes, mi and si, when the steam blows through them, giving a particularly attractive melody. Sapper wanted to avoid giving the kettles whistle the usual irksome sound of the other kettles on the market. And this purely musical requirement led to what I think can be described as Alessis first multi-sensorial design. This object appeared in the movies: Generazione 1000 euro (Generazione 1000 euro, M.Venier, 2008); Niente da nascondere (Cach , M.Haneke, 2005).

About the Designer

Richard Sapper

Richard Sapper Germany (1932 - )

Richard Sapper (born 1932 in Munich) is a German industrial designer. He received a Compasso d'Oro industrial design award in 1959. Sapper partnered with Italian designer Marco Zanuso and were hired in 1959 as consultants to Brionvega, an Italian company trying to produce stylish electronics that would compete with products manufactured in Japan and Germany. They designed a series of radios and televisions that became enduring icons of an aesthetic known as techno-functionalism. One of their more notable designs was the rounded, compact and portable Doney 14 (1962), the first television to feature completely transistorized construction. Using the aesthetic of sculptural minimalism, the pair designed the compact folding Grillo telephone for Siemens and Italtel in 1965. The Grillo was one of the first telephones to put the dial and the earpiece on the same unit, and today is a featured display at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

About the Manufacturer

Alessi's intention, from the beginning, was to be highly innovative and ready to experiment with cookware. With this in mind, the Alessi family venture explored new materials and novel design in becoming one of the finest and most well-known contemporary cookware brands. Alessi prides itself on its unique collaboration with designers and architects to produce beautiful, quality cookware. Among some of the best known of the Alessi's products are Richard Sapper's kettle with a two-tone whistle, Michael Graves' kettle with bird shaped whistle, and Philippe Starck's Juicy Salif citrus squeezer.
